Rutronik operates as a distributor of electronic components, supplying hardware for demanding IT infrastructures, edge AI applications, and data center environments. Industrial operators require server technologies that guarantee continuous operation, high system integrity, and long-term availability. Standard commercial motherboards often lack the robust lifecycle management and remote administration capabilities necessary for continuous industrial deployments. To meet these operational demands, the distributor needed to integrate entry-level and mid-range server technology into its supply chain.
Integration of open-source management platforms
To address these technical requirements, the company integrated two micro-ATX industrial server motherboards developed and manufactured in Germany by Kontron. The hardware supports Intel Xeon processors and incorporates DDR5 memory technology with error-correcting code support. A central technical feature of these boards is an open-source-based management platform for remote server administration. This platform enables administrators to perform comprehensive remote management tasks, including power management, hardware resets, and detailed sensor monitoring, ensuring continuous system operation in demanding environments.
Scalability across rack systems and edge applications
The implemented hardware solutions feature optimized peripheral component interconnect express concepts, allowing seamless integration into rack solutions ranging from 1U to 4U, as well as tower systems. The first configuration utilizes a high-speed Ethernet setup, supporting 5G wireless network integration for factory automation, healthcare IT, and broadcasting. The second configuration provides a platform tailored for web hosting and digital video recorder solutions. By manufacturing the hardware in Germany, Kontron ensures supply chain transparency and guarantees a long-term product availability of at least five years, providing industrial users with consistent lifecycle management and reduced operational disruptions.
